![]() Moment-to-moment gameplay in Future COP is fairly hectic but luckily doesn’t tank the framerate – X1-Alpha himself is modeled well, effortlessly transforming between heavy-set mech and fast-paced pursuit mode with style (a little electrical effect plays while this happens), while low-poly civilians flee all over the screen in crime war mode. While Future Cop definitely wouldn’t win any awards as one of the prettiest games on PS1, it does have a unique shifting perspective and plenty of mayhem on-screen, making it a treat all the same. The game isn’t afraid to mix in humour as well – particularly in the beloved ‘precinct assault’ mode with your constant nemesis Sky Captain, meaning despite there not being a particularly gripping story here, there’s still plenty to appreciate about it. ![]() It truly captures a post-apocalyptic feel between the destroyed buildings, meth labs, littered streets and general vibe and is one of the more memorable gaming settings I’ve visited. You’ll visit iconic locations from LA – LAX, Venice Beach etc., but they’ve all been transformed to take account of the fact that this futuristic vision is a desolate, crime-filled place full of psychotic fighters and mutants each fighting their own war for turf. What Future Cop absolutely nails though is the setting and atmosphere. The scenarios are rather bonkers – you start off by taking down rebels who are arming an observatory with weapons to take down passing planes and will progress to take down strange occultic leaders and even a rogue supercomputer – I wasn’t massively engaged in the story, but it’s a unique take that’s filled with late 90’s cyberpunk charm. ![]() The actual plot here really isn’t anything special – you’ll face off against increasingly difficult odds while exploring the slums of LA, fighting crime and taking instructions from your partner whose voice is a constant presence in your ear. Throughout the campaign (dubbed ‘crime war’), you’ll take place in a series of mission to take down crime lords, cult leaders, mutant invaders and all sorts of other threats to peace in the city. Taking place in a futuristic version of Los Angeles (“the city of angels… no angels here anymore” as the opening cutscene states), Future COP pits you as X1-Alpha – a bipedal transforming law enforcement mech whose job it is to keep the streets clear of crime. ![]()
